Background of the Study

In Nigeria, local councils play a vital role in governance and decision-making processes that directly impact communities. Despite legal provisions aimed at increasing female participation in politics, the representation of women in local councils remains low. In Jega LGA, Kebbi State, the involvement of women in local governance and decision-making is crucial for fostering gender-inclusive policies and achieving sustainable development. This study will examine the representation of women in local council decision-making, focusing on their roles, challenges, and contributions to governance in Jega.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Women’s representation in local council decision-making remains minimal in many parts of Nigeria, including Jega LGA. The underrepresentation of women in political offices, especially at the local government level, limits their ability to influence policies that directly affect women and children. This study seeks to investigate the level of female representation in local council decision-making and explore the barriers that hinder women’s political involvement.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the level of women’s representation in local council decision-making in Jega Local Government Area.

  2. To identify the challenges women face in participating in local council governance in Jega.

  3. To assess the impact of women’s involvement in decision-making processes on local policies and community development.

  4. To explore strategies for increasing women’s participation in local council decision-making.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of women’s representation in local council decision-making in Jega Local Government Area?

  2. What challenges do women face in participating in local council governance in Jega?

  3. How does women’s involvement in local council decision-making impact policies and community development?

  4. What strategies can be employed to increase women’s participation in local council decision-making?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Women’s representation in local council decision-making in Jega is low.

  2. Women face significant challenges in participating in local council decision-making processes in Jega.

  3. Women’s involvement in local council decision-making has a positive impact on community development.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to understanding the barriers and opportunities for women’s involvement in local council decision-making in Jega, Kebbi State. The findings will provide insights into how to enhance women’s political participation at the grassroots level and ensure that local governance policies are gender-inclusive.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the participation of women in local council decision-making in Jega LGA, Kebbi State. Data will be collected through interviews with female local council members, community leaders, and policymakers. Limitations may include reluctance to discuss sensitive issues or limited access to some key political figures.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Local Council Decision-Making: The process through which local government councils make policies, enact laws, and take decisions that affect the local community.

  • Representation: The act of women being present and actively involved in decision-making processes at the local government level.

  • Gender-Inclusive Governance: Governance that actively involves women and addresses their specific needs and concerns in the policy-making process.
